My Dad Was the Cook...

by Lora
(PA, USA)

My father grew up in the Great Depression, which I believe played a part in his great resourcefulness. He could do everything - whether it was domestic in nature or mechanical. He could fix the washing machine and fold the fitted sheet that came from it in a neat, tight square - which, if you ask me is impossible!

Funny, looking back on my childhood, I remember very little, but... having delicious dinners that my father made are clear as a bell!

I was never in the kitchen whenever meals were being prepared, so the only participation I had was in the eating.

When I got my own apartment at nineteen, it was obvious that I did not know how to cook - eat I knew how to do, but cook?

I found myself almost daily calling my dad. "How do you make vegetable soup, Dad?" "How do you make chili, Dad?" "Hey, Dad. How do you boil water?"

Eventually, I learned to cook... thankfully! But I judge my own cooking (and everyone's) based on how my father cooked. He will continue to be the best in my book - cookbook or otherwise!
